Many common questions for owners of this wonderful engine, are how to make it more lively and spirited, since it is a robust engine and always generous being a 6-cylinder. But the OE Components, a little for the age and a little for the accumulated kilometers begin to give signs of failure and in any case of not complete reliability, with a slightly larger turbo or even worse abnormal oil consumption and vibrations at low revs.

The turbocharged 7M-GTE was produced from 1986 to 1992. Output was 232 hp (173 kW; 235 PS) at 5,600 rpm and 344 N⋅m (254 lb⋅ft; 35.1 kg⋅m) at 3,200 rpm for most 5 psi (0.34 bar) versions. It was Toyota's top performance engine until it was replaced by the JZ-series engines.

Toyota produced a variant of the existing Japanese-market 7M-GTEU which featured a modified CT26 high-flow turbocharger and large volume intercooler, pushed output to 267 hp (199 kW) at 5,600 rpm and 358 N⋅m (264 lb⋅ft; 36.5 kg⋅m) at 4,400 rpm. This was used only in the racing homologation Toyota Supra Turbo A road and race cars. The Turbo A models also measured air based on manifold pressure rather than using an air flow meter, had a larger intercooler, larger throttle body, optimized CT-26 turbo, and various other differences. It was the fastest Japanese car at the time. The homologation was for the Group A series. The Group A Supra with a 7M-GTE and CT26 turbo produced 433 kW (580 bhp).

"ESP" Connecting Rods are manufactured from a TWO-PIECE FORGING. The forging process forces the grain into the shape of a connecting rod, resulting in a superior fatigue life. The rod cap is forged separately so that the grain runs perpendicular to the load forces, which strengthens the connecting rod.
Many aftermarket connecting rods are manufactured from 4340 steel. 4340 specs allow a range of different materials to achieve the desired results. Although it is a more expensive process, all Eagle "ESP" 3-D connecting rods also include higher content of nickel & chrome, which increases the strength & fatigue life without making the connecting rod brittle.Extensive testing has proven Eagle's two-piece forging superior to any one-piece forging on the market! All Eagle "ESP" Rods are clearly identified. Proper rod bolt torque is vital to connecting rod life. A rod bolt fastner is without question the highest stressed fastener in the engine. The big end bore of the connecting rod is a stressed bore in much the same way as cylinders are on a block. It is equally important to torque properly to provide proper strength & to insure the big end of the rod sizing is correct. Improper torque will result in premature rod failure!
